Black Church
The Black Church is the largest gothic church in the area from Vienna to Istanbul. It was built between 1383-1480. There is a church organ with 4000 pipes inside and organ organ recitals have been given here in July and August since 1891.
Why is his name black? Because the façade was darkened in the fire in 1689. Then of course they remodeled it. As a result, a Baroque church on the inside and a Gothic style church on the outside emerged. The Black Church is also famous not only for its historical stories:
The first story is about bullet marks on the inner walls of the church. With a little tour inside the church, you can see bullet marks on the walls and even the bullets themselves. The tracks are not as old as you might think. These are the traces of the anti-communist revolution in Romania on December 23, 1989. They continue all the way to the church. Of course, these are anonymous tracks. Although it is not clear who fired the guns, you can feel that chaotic period.
Another aspect that is talked about a lot is the statue of a child where one of the columns on the exterior of the church meets the roof. The child is depicted as if he had dropped something on the ground and bent down and tried to pick it up. There are 3 comments to this child's stance:
According to a rumor, the priest of the church had a very naughty son. One day, the priest locked him up in the attic as punishment. There was a fire in the church that day and the boy was locked in the attic. This statue is also the memory of him trying to escape from the flames.
According to another popular rumor, this boy was working in the construction of the church. His master sent the boy upstairs to check if the wall was straight. The boy lost his balance and the master of thought ordered this statue out of guilt.
According to the last rumor, it was a statue of a murder. This boy who worked on the construction of the church worked so hard that his colleague got jealous and pushed him down during the inspection. Later, when the child died, his colleague, who was very sorry for what he did, confessed to the priest. The other employees then decided to have this statue made in memory of the child.
